Synopsis

This stop, analyzes the prospects of deliberative democracy in Southeast Asia, with a special focus on Thailand and Taiwan.

In Thailand, the work of the Pulang Kampong Foundation in the multicultural southern region is highlighted, where they face insurgencies and ethnic tensions. The foundation promotes sustainable economic development through training in agriculture and aquaculture, establishing farmers’ councils, and encouraging public engagement. This strengthens deliberative democracy by involving minorities in dialogue with the government.

In Taiwan, the focus is on democratic transition and institutional innovation, driven by social movements and an active civil society. The organization T-ROAD fosters citizen participation through participatory budgeting and projects like “Fishery-Electricity Symbiosis,” which balances environmental and economic interests. It also addresses challenges such as misinformation and foreign cultural influence, promoting civic forums and public deliberation.

The author compares these experiences with initiatives in India, such as the Bhoodan Movement, Village Development Boards in Nagaland, and forest self-management in Mendha Lekha, emphasizing how deliberative democracy can adapt to diverse contexts to strengthen citizen participation and community development.
