Reinventing Democracy from classrooms

Book: Chronicles. Conversation Between Art, Technology and Community

Chronicle_02/Publication_02

Synopsis

This chronicle presents innovative youth participation initiatives in Rosario, Argentina, and Zagreb, Croatia, where young people transform schools into spaces for debate and active citizenship.

In Rosario, the School Citizen Laboratory engages teenagers in identifying and solving community problems, promoting collective and inclusive learning.

In Zagreb, the Croatian Debate Society uses debate clubs to develop argumentation and critical thinking skills, addressing social and ethnic issues. Both initiatives demonstrate that when young people have genuine spaces for participation, they not only transform their surroundings but also become protagonists in building a more inclusive and deliberative democracy.

The text reflects on the impact of these practices and suggests that they could become public policies, expanding their reach and strengthening youth citizenship.
