#STRUCTUREDDIALOGUE / #CIVICUNDERSTANDING
The main objective of this practice, promoted by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, is to create a safe public space for dialogue between people with opposing political views in a context marked by intense polarization, especially since the pandemic. Inspired by the German model “My Country Talks”, the initiative fosters one-on-one meetings between individuals with differing opinions, with the aim of reducing tensions and promoting mutual understanding.
The practice relies on a matching system that connects participants with divergent views based on their responses to questions about controversial topics. These questions are shared through partner media outlets, which invite the public to register. Once matched, participants engage in facilitated or informal conversations, having been prepared with tools like board games that help simulate the exchange.
Over time, the program has expanded to different regions of the country and has integrated methods to strengthen emotional safety and trust among participants. Despite its simplicity, the model has succeeded in overcoming the fear of talking to strangers and has shown that structured dialogue can be a powerful tool against polarization.
- Pairing individuals with opposing views for one-on-one dialogue
- Collaborating with media to identify divisive issues and recruit participants
- Using tools like board games to prepare for conversations
- Focusing on trust-building, emotional safety, and active listening
- Expanding the model beyond Bangkok to other regions
- Creation of safe dialogue spaces in a polarized political context
- Improved mutual understanding between people with divergent ideologies
- Reduced fear of disagreement and greater willingness to engage in dialogue
- Adaptation of the original European model to Thai political and cultural realities
