Mentorship program for deliberative models.

As part of the third edition of DemoReset, we invite social organizations, collectives, and citizen movements that develop 🗣️deliberative practices🗣️ in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, with at least two years of verifiable experience in citizen participation or advocacy processes, who want to strengthen their capacities, expand their sustainability, and project their impact within the transregional community.🔍We invite you to read about DemoReset, the benefits, commitments, timeline, and contact information for the call for proposals in the terms of reference before you begin filling out the form.

Part 4 - Tell us more about the deliberative design

How would you describe the way conversations are organized in your deliberative practice?

A meeting is called, there are defined steps for taking turns to speak, and there is a methodology for reaching an agreement. Once an agreement is reached, the meeting ends. The deliberation process has several defined phases, from planning and steps for taking the floor to consensus, and includes the return of results to participants. These are open meetings, and people can speak whenever they want because the space is free. Sometimes a final agreement is reached, sometimes not, depending on how long the interventions take and the willingness of those attending.

During the deliberative meeting, is there a stage for leveling knowledge or sharing information on the topic to be discussed?

There is a stipulated step for knowledge leveling, either at the beginning of the deliberation session, asynchronously, or virtually. Participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the topic prior to the meeting, but it is not mandatory to know about the topic to be discussed. The methodology does not require a leveling of knowledge because the interventions are free.

Describe what mechanisms or strategies you have used in your deliberative processes to promote inclusion and reduce inequalities among participants, thereby ensuring the quality of the deliberation.

The results have mainly had an impact within the organization, and their impact is recognized in communities or by external actors. The results have led to sustained transformations in decision-making, the institutional framework, public policies, and local public agendas. The results have generated specific changes in specific communities or groups, with some lessons learned being replicated or recognized by external actors.

The model allows agreements to be reached within the group, but these agreements are projected onto informal decision-making spaces. The model has succeeded in getting some agreements considered in community or institutional spaces, generating commitments or specific changes in decision-making. The model constantly influences collective or institutional decision-making, ensuring that agreements influence policies, plans, or actions recognized by other allies and external actors.

Part 7 - Tell us more about decisions

Decisions are made collectively through structured deliberative processes (meetings, dialogue mechanisms, voting, consensus) with external actors and allies. Decisions are made in a participatory manner, combining consultation with centralized decision-making when necessary. Decisions are mainly made by one or a few people (management or leadership), with consultation with the rest of the team.

A diverse team with well-defined roles and consolidated capabilities; it has proven experience in implementing deliberative spaces.

Learning occurs through the team's individual experiences and group socialization. We have evaluation and documentation methodologies in place, learning is shared both within and outside the organization, and we adapt the model. We record lessons learned and conduct occasional evaluations, which has allowed us to make adjustments to the model.

We have tested or identified ways to adapt the model in some different contexts. Some elements can be replicated, but the stages must be evaluated in detail so that it can be replicated. They have guidelines for adapting and transferring the deliberative model, and it has been tested in different contexts, groups, and territories. It works in the particular context in which it has already been applied and depends on the organization's team.
